The buzz in South Tampa is about the closing of Tampa Bay Farmer’s Market but no worries, South Tampa Fresh Market Opens
Discover the difference, taste farm-fresh tomatoes like you remember as a kid and tree-ripened fruit that ripened naturally, not after weeks in storage, gassed to simulate the ripening process. Go for freshly picked, in-season produce at its peak for flavor and nutrition. Where?
South Tampa Fresh Market at 4807 South Himes Avenue in South Tampa.
Owners Rob Rice and John Cannon are bridging the gap following closure of Tony Sansone’s Tampa Bay Farmer’s Market at South MacDill and Swann Avenue* Rob and John offer the same farm fresh nutritious fruits and vegetables, local honey, bee pollen, fresh-baked breads and more at better than grocery store prices!
Open 3 ½ weeks the response has been great, a steady stream of customers drove in as Rob and I talked yesterday.
Rob has owned and operated several businesses, John’s background is as a produce supplier to local restaurants not as a former defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for those of you who remember JC!
South Tampa Fresh Market is conveniently located alongside the Gandy Publix, neighboring Barista’s and one of Tampa’s best kept secrets, Vino Y Pasta, their frontage is on Himes. Luis Zamora’s son-in-law, Andres Roman at Vino y Pasta, said they buy for their restaurant and enjoy the convenience of having the Market at their backdoor.
Looking for Dragon fruit, gooseberries or rhubarb? The Market has a large selection of fruits and vegetables, locally sourced when possible and should they not have what you need they will get it for you! Better yet, if you share your needs for the week by letting them know what your recipes call for Rob said they will source your list, just swing by to pick-it up!
Rob guarantees their produce, if you are unhappy with your selection for any reason let them know and you receive a credit on your next purchase.
Personally, my family of foodies has consistently found everything we need at South Tampa Fresh Market. I love the convenience of popping in quickly to grab fresh tomatoes, lettuces, carrots and cukes for a big salad, Brussel sprouts, green beans and broccoli for the grill or Thai chili peppers, Poblanos and Habanero when I am feeling extreme! Last night we made our favorite Tajin Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potato Skins.
“I like to buy local, from small businesses when I can, and his prices are great!”
~ Stephanie Andrews
Besides fresh produce the Market carries my all-time favorite Best Ever ballpark Boiled Peanuts from Hawk’s, John’s mom makes and sells fresh banana and other breads as fruits become over ripe, and they have several local honeys for sale, bee pollen, my favorite salad dressing Farmer Boy Greek and potted herbs. They are looking to carry seasonal flowers and plants and are researching the possibility of offering Christmas trees this year.
Shopping from a local Farmer’s market connects me to my region and the seasons, I look forward to fresh Ruskin tomatoes, asparagus and strawberries in spring, fresh corn and plums in the summer, pumpkins, squash and figs in the fall.
“I like supporting local farming families while knowing I am feeding my family produce that is minimally processed.” ~ Helen Kessler

Note Tampa Bay Farmer’s market at Swann and MacDill recently closed to make way for 4 Rivers Smokehouse BBQ Restaurant. With 10 restaurants statewide this is their second restaurant in Tampa. I have heard from friends who love their restaurant in Gainesville that 4-Rivers is awesome, can’t wait! Please share your favorite fruit and veggie recipes!
I look forward to your reply. With a smile, Carlyn 🙂
