Moving Countdown

You’re relocating to NY and have the grand task of packing up your home ahead of you. You may have just a few questions, most of which your shipping company can answer but we thought we’d just run through a few things with you……….

Typically it takes 6-8 weeks from the time your goods are packed to delivery of your sea shipment to your new home. You may therefore want to consider sending essential items via airfreight in advance of your sea shipment, particularly if you already have a permanent address you are going to. For families essential items like strollers, car seats, bikes, clothing and/or school/medical/dental records.

It’s not recommended to pack the following in your unaccompanied air shipment

Fine jewellery

Wills, deeds

Photos

Compact discs, tapes, valuable collections

Make sure everything you ship is clean and dry, since dampness and humidity are the leading causes of shipping and storage damage.

Your shipping company will supply you with instructions concerning insurance on the shipment. Pay attention to the requirements for separate inventory lists for each part of your household goods shipment eg one for air, one for sea, one for storage. These sheets must be given to the insurance carrier before you move. Valuables and antiques should be appraised. You need to make sure you check all items on arrival and note any damage or loss on the inventory sheet before the driver leaves on moving in day!!!

In NY you’ll also be expected to tip the guys delivering your goods, we’d say around 80 bucks each as a rough guide
