True callings and genuine love, how do you answer the question….is this IT? Is this what I want? We ask ourselves this question time and again as we grow, learn, and hopefully, mature into this thing called, Adulthood. Simply put, life’s complicated, it’s a tough question. From the mind of genius playwright Donald Margulies (Dinner with Friends) comes an inspiring, fun story touching on morality, relationships, the angst of mid-life crises, and true and lasting friendship titled: Time Stands Still. Finally, we get to see this fun, award-winning play at The Straz courtesy of the talented folks at Jobsite Theater! Let the fun begin with ‘When Time Stands Still’ at the Straz.
The Fun Begins When ‘Time Stands Still’ | At The Straz
This Pulitzer Prize winning play, considered one of the best on Broadway for ten years, shares the story of James and Sarah, a journalist and a photographer. Nine years a couple, they are adrenaline junkies, sharing their lust for one another, and the thrill of reporting the realities of war. While shooting in Iraq, their luck runs out as a bomb blast leaves Sarah with permanent, visual scars. Faced with the realization she is NOT invincible, Sarah begins thinking about her future, will she continue her exhilarating career or choose the relative contentment of a quiet domestic life.
The “R” Word
Boyfriend/lover James returns stateside with Sarah to mend her physical wounds, while he deals with the unseen scars of guilt in this thrilling yet humorous stage play. Stunned by James’ desire to settle down and live life-like their editor-friend Richard, Sarah and James begin discussing the realities of “adulting”. Pondering responsibility, they discuss their views of responsibility not only to themselves, but to those they love, their home, and the faceless people who consume their work, their readers.
This couple thrives on making a difference in the world, they love what they do and must decide, what is most important. It’s a difficult question, with no easy answers, for this adventurous couple confronted with continuing or choosing the often complex constraints of a ‘conventional life’. Time Stands Still shines a spotlight on the moment their lives took a turn.
It Happens to All of Us
Faced with the reality of what just happened in Orlando we are acutely aware of how quickly everything can change. The briefest of ‘moments’ and nothing is the same for the families and victims of the Pulse shootings, and many other tragedies. Time Stands Still focuses on just such a time as James and Sarah try to find balance in a world gone crazy.
Bloomberg News put it this way: “A rare play that encompasses universal issues and personal problems with equal compassionate insight. A splendid theatrical experience culminates in the author’s taking no sides and providing no easy answers. What we get is the assiduously impartial, clarifying confrontation of the existential dilemmas that confront all of us.” It’s out-of-the-ordinary moments, when facing life-changing decisions, we remember.
